Purpose:

A paradigm was needed across Greater Manchester to ensure a coordinated population approach to reduce children and families exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and, to prevent or mitigate the consequences of trauma and ACEs by becoming a Trauma and ACE responsive city-region.

Trauma impacts every element of life and can affect a persons ability to engage in society meaningfully, it can present as distressed or challenging behaviour and can ultimately affect relationships, engagement, employment and the ability to contribute to society in a positive and meaningful way, this is not inevitable and the way systems, staff and communities respond can have protective and positive effects.

This programme includes:
- The development of co-produced test-and-learn approaches which can support community resilience now (focused on trauma arising from or compounded by the covid pandemic) and in the future
- Collaborative approaches to sharing existing knowledge and practices across the city region via a Greater Manchester community of practice hub; and
- Support for skills and competency development and CPD across professions and service areas, including community partners.

This programme was supported in 2021/22 through VRU funding and additional Home Office funding in 2021.
To date, the GM VRU have awarded Salford City Council £425,885 (£200,000 out of the 2020/21 VRU funding and an additional £225,885 from the Home Office in 2021/22). To deliver the GM Trauma Responsive and ACEs programme. This will bring the total funding amount to £700,885
