GMP has seen high risk drivers evading camera
detection and drivers having vehicle licence plates doctored so
that camera systems will not be able to read the plate.
Evasion from cameras occurs when a film/coating is applied to a
number plate. Enforcement cameras – both handheld and static
cameras – work by using infra-red light to read a
plate.
Where a coating is applied to characters on the plate this causes
the cameras to fail to read the correct registration for the
vehicle.
The driver can avoid detection and continue dangerous driving
behaviours thanks to their “ghost plate.” These devices
will be deployed across several teams each with a particular
focus.
Funding of £8099.28 is approved to be
spent by GMP to purchase 60 sets of infra-red night vision goggles
to support enforcement.
