Purpose:

Frank Shani is the father of Nathaniel Shani, who was tragically murdered on 15th September 2023 in Tavistock Square, Harpurhey. Since Nathaniel’s murder, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor have both met Frank Shani and the wider family of Nathaniel to support them following the murder and to discuss issues of knife crime more generally, providing assurance that work is taking place to reduce knife crime and other serious violence across the city region.

A memorial service is planned for Nathaniel on 15th September 2024, one year on from the date of his murder, for which the Shani family sought £500.00 to cover the cost of wreaths, banners, T-shirts and other decorative items. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor have approved this funding. The VRU will coordinate the purchase and delivery of items in question.

Decision:

The VRU wishes to fund the provision of memorial items, such as wreaths, banners, T-shirts and other decorative items, to the maximum value of £500.00 to be used for a memorial service dedicated to the memory of Nathaniel Shani, who lost his life through knife crime in September 2023. The items in question will be paid for via a GMCA purchase card with the items being delivered directly to Frank Shani, the father of Nathaniel.
